AMOEBAS

Costume Designed for the Costume Designed for the dance duet “Amoebas” by Alex De Vries and Elia Pangaro, both member of the Mits Collective.

Amoebas is a piece about the integration of identity to the characters starting of in the performance as amoebas. In this piece Alex and Elia, the two dancers start off as uniformed amoebas, with costumes that relate to construction worker clothes or even to firefighting gear.

As they peel off this second unifromed skin that doesn’t allow their identities to come through, they disclose themselves as complementary characters, both side of one dual body that sticks together in figures. These figures are made by the actual bodies of the two dancers that in a weight carrying game aided by velcro in their costumes become one.

Their “second skin” that defines them as amoebas is also an important visual aid to space, as soon as they manage to peel them off, the patches made of yellow and reflective light become spacial elements and are moved into a composition that becomes an art work within the performance.
