ONA (SHE)

ONA (SHE) is an entity that is composed of the aura of many other female ones. She is a witch. She is a siren. She is whichever animal she sees fit. She is Hekate, Nyx, Eva, Pandora, Lilith, Medusa, Sycorax,… She is divine, yet She is just a woman.

Throughout his-tory, She has kept strengths and knowledges that have been banned from the world we live in. She patiently waited through moons, through cycles. She is ready to scream as the most feared siren and whisper as the more renowned witch whom they could not burn. She embodies all women, the young, the mature and the old. ONA is made of many; many she’s, many layers, many identities.

She doesn’t mind being feared, She stands tall and She does no longer apologize for being, for doing, for occupying the space She needs. Train your eyes to the dark. See her. She speaks all female tongues. Hear her. Follow her lead. Because ONA is just one. She is ready to show the world her true selves, her deep waters, her dark side and her dusk light.

ONA (SHE) is a movement and voice solo performance by Anamaria Klajnšček. She took inspiration for the piece from three main pillars: the women in her family and their archetype of the female powers, Sirens as mythological creatures and Witches as real female entities as well as the Dark Ages’ his-story of classifying women as such in order to gain power on their expense. The performer and creator has used the following books as a research foundation for “ONA (SHE)”; Women Who Run With the Wolves: ESTÉS, Clarissa Pinkola. In defense of Witches: CHOLLET Mona. Caliban and the Witch: FEDERICI, Silvia. Mysteries of the Dark Moon: GEORGE, Demetra. Sirenas de Leyenda: GIORDANO, Rémi, GODAT, Olivia, PÉREZ, Laura.

Scales Development with the input of Faustine Tournay:

The process of creating and making ONA’s scales was on in its own, starting off with the gathering of nature textures - especially of those animals that inspired Anamaria’s movements - and creating moodboards. Following this alongside Faustine, my assistant at the time, I created a division of guiding animals for each body section. These sections had been pre-thought to generate the visuals of an outer skeleton or a thick animalistic skin for ONA’s red stage. ONce those were defined the digital design of each scale area took place followed by the testing out of 3D printing onto elastic mesh fabric. These patches, once quality proofed for being worn on a dance stage were all printed and attached to the Red Phase’s Base jumpsuit.
